Sinumbra Lamp Picture(s) and Description:

SINUMBRA LAMP ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Circa first to second quarter 19th century~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Up for Auction is a beautiful Sinumbra Lamp. Early 19th century sinumbra lamp with a fluted column standing on a tripod of claw feet. and partially frosted and wheel cut glass shade. The height is 30” and the width of the glass shade from side to side is. 13” Sinumbra lamps, literally lamps giving light ‘without shadow’, became an important technological innovation in lighting during the period of the Classical Revival. With its light source set at the center of the circular tank that held the fluid that was burned to produce light, the illumination that fell on the table surface was ‘without shadow’. The light was modulated by the use of half-dome shades that were variously clear and frosted and wheel cut with a wide variety of designs. Please look closely at the lamp. You will see it is in wonderful condition. The shade has a grape cluster and running vine motif. There are no cracks or chips. Note the air bubbles visible in the rim close up. There is one small bubble that is on the surface edge of the rim that is a factory made break thru bubble which is normal in antique glass. You can feel the break thru bubble when running your finger along the rim. Some the paint on the oil ring is missing and note under the base to see two wooden blocks, one is missing. These are minor issues in a Sinumbra Lamp. The trio of claw feet are clear and crisply detailed. The lamp must be paid for in full 3 days after the auction close and before item is shipped. Buyer pays for shipping. Pay Pal only and sale only to buyers in contiguous US
