antiquesUneed store Authentic Hand Thrown Arts & Crafts Pottery Lamp Base Grueby, Teco, Weller, Wheatley Fulper, Hampshire Would gracefully accommodate a Tiffany, Handel, Bigelow & Kennard, Duffner & Kimberly or other quality leaded lamp shade or Arts & Crafts, Mission, Art Nouveau or Art Deco Period shade. THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE POTTERY BASE ONLY. THE CANISTER & OTHER METAL ITEMS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE AUCTION & WERE ONLY USED TO SHOW HOW THE POTTERY WOULD APPEAR ONCE FIT WITH APPROPRIATE HARDWARE. HOWEVER, I PURCHASED THE CANISTER SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS POTTERY BASE AS IT FIT PERFECTLY. THE TOP SWIRLING PORTION OF THE CANISTER IS BRONZE AND I WILL OFFER IT TO THE WINNING BIDDER AFTER THE AUCTION. Height: 10 1/8" or 257.18mm Width: 8 1/8" or 206.38mm Aperture opening: 5.0" or 127.00mm Base width: 7 1/2" or 190.50mm I believe this is a HAND THROWN piece, as indicted within the interior and NOT MOLDED. HOWEVER, you the buyer make that determination as I am fairly familiar with pottery and our opinions may vary. I do believe it is 100% HAND THROWN. The uneven deep to lighter rich textured green glaze adds an organic element to this piece; the four buttressed feet appearing as if stylized tree trunks giving it more form and stability. The overall condition is VERY GOOD - EXCELLENT. The body has NO damage, cracks, repairs or other issues. There are single chips on 3 foot corners and of which some past owner decided to dab with dark pigment in an attempt to lessen their white clay color and distinctness. THE CHIPS DO NOT DISTRACT FROM THE BEAUTY OF THE PIECE AND COULD BE PROPERLY repaired & COLORED IF DESIRED. THERE IS A LOCAL RESTORER WHO SAID IT WAS A VERY EASY AND LOW COST REPAIR TO PERFORM. The photos make the chips APPEAR much more significant then they are. The base is NOT SIGNED, there aren't even faint marks. Definitely looks like a Grueby pot-- very organic in form, glaze and the four buttressed feet. One of the things that Grueby and some of their competitors did, was to copy shapes and glazes from European art pottery about the same period of time. And this piece probably dates from 1900 to 1910. But GRUEBY was not the only one to borrow shapes from other companies. The fact of the matter is, this is POSSIBLY Grueby, Teco, Weller, possibly a HAND THROWN Wheatley or a Cincinnati piece of art pottery. Whatever it is does matter but besides the maker, it is in its own right a very beautiful Arts & Crafts period American pottery lamp base. If you need additional photos simply ask.
