Messengers Patent Banquet Oil Lamp. Cut Crystal Font Picture(s) and Description:
MESSENGERS PATENT BANQUET OIL LAMP. CUT CRYSTAL FONT Another quality item searched for with care by Jims Things This distinctive and grand looking banquet oil lamp was made by the company of 'Messengers' using the same twin Duplex burner made and invented by Hinks & Son in the middle of the 19th century.
please click the image bellow.
The lamp support is a brass Corinthian column standing on a four step square base and with a cast iron slug underneath it to give the lamp stability when using it. The brasswork for the base has some very light pitting to the surface but is otherwise un damaged and finishes in a very well cast capital under a reeded column.
The font for the lamp is completely original to it and is heavy and deeply cut crystal with a pattern of sprays underneath a hobnail surround, all in perfect condition.
Messengers name is inscribed on the bayonet fitting collar of the font and supports the rising gallery burner mentioned earlier. This burner is also stamped with 'Messengers Patent' and has a patented, working snuffer lever, a riser key with the word 'Patent' on it, allowing the lamp to be lit without the removal of the chimney or shade and the patent double wick adjustment wheels incorported through one single tube. There are a couple of brass, stress breaks to the outside ring of the gallery which do not affect anything except close visual inspection.
With its original oval chimney in place the lamp is 31.5 inches tall.
