Civil War Era Flint Glass Whale Oil Lamp c.1860s Picture(s) and Description:

Civil

Here I have a very nice Civil War Era flint glass oil lamp. My Thuro (page 104) book says it was likely made during the Civil War. It is combined with a fancy opaque white glass base. This base is on page 93 (picture g.) Thuro book, and is dated in the 1860s. In the period from 1857 to 1863, kerosene went from sparse use, to widespread use. Lamps like this had collars which allowed the use of whale-oil, burning fluid or kerosene burners, so during this period it was really the type of burner that determined the lamp classification. The patriotic motif design is "Shield and Star". I found this lamp in my "Oil Lamp, The Kerosene Era in North America" by Catherine M. V. Thuro. Book isn't part of this auction. I would be glad to copy some pages and send them along if you request. It is 8" tall and the base 3-1/2" x 3-1/2". No chips or cracks. There are some lines under the brass neck but I don't consider them cracks and I tried to picture them. I am not an expert on any of the items I put up for auction, so descriptions may not include everything there is to know about an item. Please ask questions and I will do my best to help you. All my items are used unless described and sold "as is". Thank-you for looking! Happy Bidding! I will be shipping this piece in a 12" x 12" x 8" box with tissue, bubble wrap, and styrofoam peanuts at a shipping weight of 2-3 lbs. When listing, ebay has you choose shipping weights. For example: 1-2 lbs., 2-3 lbs., 3-4 lbs. etc. for the shipping calculator.
